Omaha Beach
Surf, Sand, Golf and Sea
Omaha Beach - translated from Maori to mean a 'place of pleasure' and you are greeted with glorious island views in all directions. The four-kilometre Omaha Beach of pristine white sand and often good surf (lifeguards are on duty all summer) is a great place to learn to surf or paddleboard with the various companies offering this or take a walk along the beach, relax or take swim.
Omaha is also home to the Omaha Beach Golf Club - a links, 18 hole golf course, sitting alongside the Omaha estuary. Omaha also offers a tennis courts, bowling greens, kids playgrounds, reserves, walking tracks, all-tides boat ramp on the harbour for those who'd like to take their boat out to water-ski, fish or dive.
To the west of Omaha is the tiny settlement of Point Wells. It's a step back in time to 1950s New Zealand, with its cute bach's and wide green reserve along the harbour front shaded by old pohutakawa trees. A concrete boat ramp at the end of the Point gives boat access to the Whangateau Harbour for two hours either side of low tide.
There is a selection of jetties on the harbour, which provide fantastic swimming in crystal clear water at high tide. Across the harbour is the historic Big Omaha Wharf, which has now been fully restored. It was once a scene of bustling industry as steamships took loads of firewood from the surrounding hills down to Auckland in the early 1900s. Now a great place to throw in a line, sit back and take in the view of Omaha.
Omaha is also very well known for its local produce, especially summer fruit and you can now visit Jones Road Cider and taste the difference of hand crafted Apple Cider.
Enjoy the beach life and stay at the many holiday houses on offer, B&B's or Lodges in the area.
